Calculated Member

Does anyone know if BIDS Helper would be of assistance to create a calculated member in a Tabular Model like you can do in a MOLAP model in SSAS?

Unlike MOLAP models, Tabular models only support calculated measures, not calculated members in other dimensions.

This is a limitation of the current version of the Tabular engine, BIDS Helper cannot help with this.

Actually I was able to figure out how to do it in the XMLA (probably not supported) but it worked. Although, it is not drillable.

We actually checked with the product team before implementing some of our recent tabular features. Things like actions are supported in XMLA, but there is no editor in SSDT for them, so we felt comfortable implementing that feature.

On the other hand there are some things like calculated members that you can "hack" into the XMLA that work (or appear to work), but are completely unsupported. If you have created a calculated member in XMLA you would have to have done it as an MDX calculation, so it will not work with DAX clients like Power View and it may interact in strange ways with any DAX measures that you may have.

You would be correct! It does work in MDX tools (like Pivot Tables) but not Power View. Still looking for a viable DAX solution to implement something like Calculated Members. Let you know when I figure it out! Hopefully it is coming soon in the product itself in Tabular Models!
