We often have to create partitions, it would be nice to generate them in BIDS. This would save us a lot of time.

The thing is that I sometimes want to generate 20 or 30 partitions instead of creating them manually. This would save me a lot of time (indeed, I mean a wizzard-like approach).

But you're right, I could solve this using AMO. I will work this out today.

BIDS already has a UI for creating partitions. So I assume you are talking about some sort of wizard approach that would generate partitions. Are you able to provide more details about how you would see this working?

In my experience the most common pattern is to generate a date based partitioning scheme and we only generate a template partition in BIDS and then dynamically add partitions as part of our ETL. We would not want to have to re-deploy from BIDS in order to add new partitions, so I'm not sure what sort of scenario you have in mind.

I use the following simple biml file:

When using this file in BIDS helper 1.6.2 (Visual Studio 2010), the parent package is generated using an external reference. What I need is a project reference so everything will work after deploying the project to a production server.

You wont need the PackageProjects Node since you allready have a project in Visula Studio.

Hi,

In one of my packages I'm getting an exception when trying to use the BIDS Helper variable expression editor. If I open a new project and create a variable, it works fine. Image of error is attached.
Using Win7 Enterprise SP1, SSDT (SQL 2012), BIDS Helper 1.6.1 (used exe installer).

What info can I provide about the package, what's relevant for this kind of error? I tried different names and types of variables, always same exception.

When deploying a tabular model. I receive the error "Can't get Sandbox! at BIDShelp.TabularActionsEditor.Plugin.EXEC()"

I can get to the BIDS Help Tabular Actions Editor by right clicking on the model in solution explorer

I think I've got this fixed in the source code and the fix will be in the next release.

The only way I've been able to reproduce this is by going to Solution Explorer and Ctrl-clicking References and Model.bim so that both are highlighted. Once I do that, when I go to the Build menu and do a Build, it tells me actions were lost then gives me the error message you mentioned above.

In studying the code, it could be made a bit less prone to errors. I'll work on that.

The code loops through all the items in Solution Explorer, finds the *.bim file, selects it and makes sure the designer window is open, then checks whether actions have been lost. If they have been lost, then it calls some code that relies on the .bim file being the first item selected in Solution Explorer.

If you can provide any further details about exactly what's selected in Solution Explorer and exactly where you click to deploy the model, then that may help me ensure I've got your scenario covered.

The workaround for now is to manually open the Tabular Actions Editor. It should warn you that stuff has been lost. Then click OK to save the restored actions. That should restore actions and allow you to deploy without it running into the current problem during deployment.

Hi,

In both 2005 and 2008 versions if you have a solution, and inside that you have solution folders to organise projects - then any of the projects inside do not have the "Delete Dataset Cache Files" options. Any projects directly under the main solution have this option.

First, just got this and it is great. Thank you.

I was testing out the design warning feature and it is throwing false positives for the 2012 version.
It has a warning for all of my DB connections which indeed are coming from a config file. They even have the little blue corner mentioning they are from a configuration. Thank you.

Might I suggest an automated search-and-replace type of extension to BIDSHelper? Something where you decorate a calculated set with a certain keyword/comment, and BIDSHelper (upon deployment?) searches for (later) calculations that use that set?

For example:

we would probably want to "inline" the sets on a build event, but leave comment "markers" so that we could update the sets if the original definition was ever changed. If we did this then the original project would still be usable by someone without BIDSHelper installed.

I know BIDSHelper can find datasets that aren't used in a report. What about finding fields that are no longer used?

We're re-working a number of our reports and removing a bunch of report items that use expressions based on different dataset fields. Would like to be able to clean-up the dataset as well so only the data that is used in the report is retrieved from the
database.

This would be an ideal enhancement since it will allow us to remove unneeded fields from stored procedures or views that feed the different reports in the project. Even more ideal would be a way for BIDS Helper to see if that same Stored Procedure is being used in other reports in the project and determine if it uses some fields that another report doesn't. But just the first feature that Phil mentions would be wonderful.

Thanks for a great enhancement to the best reporting tool money can buy (IMHO).

As you can see, it's just running dtutil.exe. So it appears BIDS Helper is doing what you're telling it to do correctly.

But maybe we can troubleshoot. If you open Management Studio, can you connect to SSIS on LVEDWDV01?

If you change the BIDS Helper Deploy options to DestinationType=SqlServerDestination does it work then? The options that start with SsisPackageStore*** cause different parameters to be passed to dtutil.exe. I've found SqlServerDestination more reliable and less prone to problems with different environment configurations.

And perhaps even for third party components... I created some myself and I often get questions about why it doesn't work on the server (they forgot the install it on the server)
