Object reference not set to an instance of an object.

I'm getting the error below when I click on the button "..." to edit variables expressions on the SSIS package.

I'm using VS 2015 Professional.

Can you go to Help... About Microsoft Visual Studio... Copy Info... then paste it here? My Integration Services version shows as 13.0.1601.5 and BIDS Helper is version 2.0.1 and I can't seem to repro this.

Same versions as I have. I tried to repro again and had no luck. Can you describe your sequence of clicks. How do you launch the Variables window? What options are selected? Showing variables from all scopes? Showing system variables? What tab are you on in the package? Control flow? Data flow? Event handlers? What are you clicked on in the SSIS package? The package background? A data flow? An event handler? Is the package in debug mode (running)? Is it SQL 2016 target server version or an older target version?

fpmorais wrote Mar 8, 2017 at 10:31 AM

The steps I take are:
  • Open a package
  • Right click on Control Flow background
  • Choose option Variables
  • Click on the "..." to edit one of them
At this point a pop up appears with the error message I've pasted above.

I've found a clue. This happens only when I have an object variable without a defined value. As this is a generated project with EzApi I'm probably not initializing the variable as I should.

Sorry and thanks for your help :)

Please mark this as Resolved.

Thank you very much.

furmangg wrote Mar 8, 2017 at 12:37 PM

Glad you figured it out. If you will upload a small sample package I can fix the bug in BIDS Helper.

fpmorais wrote Mar 8, 2017 at 5:45 PM

I don't think a normal user can create a variable without a Type Value, so I don't think this is a bug.

Even so, for you reference in the zip file you will find two packages, one with the bug and the other without.

Thank you again for your time
